How massages help when you’re training

Running is a very repetitive process, and the more you run, the faster and more powerful you become. However, the effect of this on your muscles is to make them shorter and tighter, with a consequent decrease in the delivery of oxygen to the muscles because of the compression.

Sports massage works on the muscles to help lengthen them and relieve tightness which helps with motion and also improves circulation. Your circulatory system delivers oxygen and nutrients to the muscles and takes away waste, so a massage, will therefore, enhance the process and improve your body’s efficiency.

This is why massage treatments are such a useful part of your marathon training schedule. The more effective your circulatory system is at delivering oxygen and nutrients, the better it is for your running.

If you are planning to have a pre-race massage, schedule it in for 3-5 days beforehand: remember, the deeper the massage, the longer it will take for your body to respond. If you’re not sure about the best time for a treatment, talk to Isy!

Post-race sports massage

A post-race sports massage will be much more gentle than the treatments you have during training. It’s not just a lovely treat to look forward to as you pound the roads, it’s designed to help your body recover more quickly. It does this by:

  • Helping the circulatory system deal with the waste products which, if they become stuck in your muscles, can be painful
  • Reducing the intensity of delayed muscle soreness which is usually experienced 1-3 days after a marathon
  • Stretching the muscles and improving your body’s flexibility
  • Helping to heal the micro damage to the muscle tissue that usually occurs on long runs
  • Releasing endorphins which act as a natural pain relief.
